What is counselling?

Why counselling?
Part of being human is that we all experience difficulties in life. Sometimes we can deal with these on our own or with the help and support of friends and family. At other times, however, we might feel overwhelmed by difficult feelings or stuck in patterns of thinking and behaviour which we feel powerless to change.

Counselling can provide a safe space where you can express and work through your difficulties and concerns with a trained professional who will not judge you, but who will help you to understand yourself more fully and empower you to find a way forward.

What can counselling help with?
Counselling can help with a wide range of issues and concerns, for example:

  • Feeling depressed, sad, anxious or stressed
  • Low self-esteem
  • Coping with loss or bereavement
  • Facing redundancy or retirement
  • Facing difficult decisions about the future
  • Life transitions
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Exploring gender or sexuality
  • Wanting to change unwanted patterns of behaviour, eg. unhealthy eating habits, self-harming, difficulties in expressing or controlling anger
  • The impact of physical, emotional or sexual abuse

Whatever your concerns, please do not think they are too insignificant to bring to counselling; if any aspect of life is causing you emotional pain that won't go away, it is worth talking it through with someone who is trained to help.
